Musculoskeletal Injection Q&A

What is a musculoskeletal injection?

A musculoskeletal injection is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve pain, inflammation, or general discomfort caused by an illness or injury that affects your bones, joints, muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

Musculoskeletal injections use safe doses of prescription medications, like corticosteroids, to improve or maintain physical function and stability.

Most musculoskeletal problems respond well to conservative treatments like ice, rest, and over-the-counter medication. If your pain persists or interferes with your quality of life, though, a musculoskeletal injection, or series of injections, may be necessary.

Are there different types of musculoskeletal injections?

At Advanced Arthritis and Rheumatology Center, the team offers several types of musculoskeletal injections, including:

Corticosteroid injections

A corticosteroid injection uses prescription medication to reduce inflammatory cell activity in one or more joints. This type of injection is particularly beneficial for pain caused by osteoarthritis. The relief provided by corticosteroid injections usually lasts 2-3 months.

Hyaluronic acid injections

Hyaluronic acid acts as a cushion or buffer for inflamed and irritated cells inside your joints. If you have a rheumatic illness like osteoarthritis, your joint fluid becomes watery. Hyaluronic acid injections restore your joint fluid’s natural properties, serving as a lubricant and shock absorber.

Trigger point injections

Trigger points are painful knots in your muscles. They form when a muscle can’t relax. Trigger point injections are injections of anesthetic and steroid directly into “knots” in your muscle, which help soothe muscle pain, especially in your arms, legs, lower back, and neck. It also can be used to treat fibromyalgia and myofascial pain.

What type of musculoskeletal injection is right for me?

The type of musculoskeletal injection that’s right for you depends on the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms.

Following a physical exam and review of your medical history, the team at Advanced Arthritis and Rheumatology Center can make recommendations that align with your individual needs. Dr. Doshi may also suggest medications as an alternative.
